Hair Transplant Surgery in Toronto

Hair transplant surgery is a delicate and sophisticated procedure requiring specialized skills. Dr Paul Cotterill is a leading hair transplant expert in Toronto, utilizing follicular unit grafting techniques to provide the most natural appearance for his patients.

It is an ideal solution for early male pattern baldness and female thinning as it does not affect hair growth on the recipient part. Hair that is newly transplanted will grow remarkably after this procedure. Contact us to learn more about hair transplant surgery.

Setting Realistic Expectations

It's crucial to have realistic expectations when undergoing hair transplant surgery. While the procedure significantly improves hair density, it does not recreate the fullness you had as a teenager. Instead, the final look resembles "early thinning," which provides a natural, age-appropriate hair density. Understanding this helps patients appreciate the subtle yet impactful results of the hair transplant surgery.

Hair Growing Cycle

Understanding this cycle helps patients set realistic expectations for the hair growth process post-transplant. The hair growth cycle consists of four main stages:

  • Anagen phase: This growing phase lasts two to eight years, during which the hair grows actively.

  • Catagen phase: In this transitional phase, which lasts two to three weeks, the hair follicles begin to shrink.

  • Telogen phase: This resting phase lasts about two to four months when the hair falls out.

  • Exogen phase: The final stage where old hairs are shed from the scalp, making way for new growth.

Variation in Growth Speed

  • Hair growth speed may vary by implantation area.

  • Front transplanted hair tends to grow in faster than crown area hair, as such it can take longer to appreciate the final results in crown transplanted areas.

  • Areas with less blood circulation may take up to 24 months for total growth.

Shock Loss Phase

Occurs 2 to 3 weeks post-surgery, causing initial growth followed by shedding. This is a natural response, known as "telogen effluvium," to the stress of surgery. Roots remain healthy, and the phase is part of the natural hair growth cycle.

Promoting Hair Growth

A balanced diet, hydration, and scalp massages enhance growth.

How Will You Look after Your Hair Transplant?

It is impossible to predict precisely how many hairs will appear in any given graft, but at least 90% and often 100% of them will normally survive transplanting. We have never encountered a patient who showed no growth whatsoever. After 4 to 6 months, the grafts' skin surface usually blends perfectly with the surrounding scalp. In some patients, however, the grafts may be a shade lighter in colour until they are “aged” by sun exposure. Additionally the surrounding skin , in very fair skinned patients, can appear slightly pinkish for a few added months, until the pink appearance fully resolves. In summary, with the new techniques of follicular unit grafting using all 1-3 hair single follicular units, the hairline no longer appears as abrupt or dense as with older traditional grafts. Single follicular units create a very natural-looking, soft hairline. They also do not result in removing any existing hair in the recipient area and are, therefore, advantageous for transplanting in patients with “early” MPB or female thinning.
